Sharing Our Harvest- Positive Ageing Week 2013

As part of ‘Positive Aging Week 2013’ we decided to share out some of the harvest from the horticulture module with a a Day Care Centre for the elderly in Newbridge, Co. Kildare. The daily capacity of this centre is 20/25 persons. They also run a meals on wheels service which provides 40 meals to Newbridge and surrounding area five days a week. They were thrilled with our donation. The staff and members there really enjoyed our visit and loved seeing and using the organic produce. PAW-BBC-Ezine-Banner-Updated

“It was great to meet everyone in the Newbridge Day Care Centre. Rachel’s mum is the manager there and her sister is a nurse there too. We felt great about sharing our fruit and vegetable with the Meals on Wheels and kitchen in the centre. They treated us very kindly and gave us a lovely cup of tea and some biscuits.”

“I had a a great time. We sang a song for the guys in the Day Care Centre, they thought it was very good. Next we sang happy birthday to Alison, Rachel’s sister who works there as a nurse. She was 26 years old. We went down to the Day Care Centre to share some of the fruit and vegetables, that we grew here in our centre, with them. They were thrilled with everything and thanked us a lot.”

“The weather wasn’t great but we still enjoyed ourselves. We went down to Newbridge in Co. Kildare to share some of our fruit and vegetables with the Meals on Wheels and Day Care Centre down there. We took some photos of ourselves giving the food to the staff and members there. Rachel’s mum Joan works there and she knew my name. She also gave us a lovely cup of tea and some biscuits. I started everyone off singing a song and we also sang Happy Birthday to Alison (Rachel’s sister). She was very embarrassed and surprised.”

“I had a fun day dropping the fruit and vegetables down to the Day Care Centre in Newbridge. It was great to meet everyone. I’d say they will make apple tarts or crumbles with the apples that we gave them.”

– Patricia Carey

The manager of the Day Care Centre (Joan Kiernan) sent us down two lovely apple tarts to thank us for all the fruit and vegetables.

We really liked this idea that the Day Care Centre had outside their front door. They used an old wheel barrow and transformed it into a beautiful plant pot.
