‘Enjoy Tennis Project’

We have recently started the ‘Enjoy Tennis Project’ in ‘Swords Tennis Club’ with thanks to James Dwane (tennis coach), Liam O’Donohoe (vice president of ‘Tennis Ireland’) & Brendan Moran (‘Tennis Ireland’ development officer for North Dublin).

The project is an exciting new development that aims to create access to tennis for over 400 people with an intellectual disability by the end of 2016. It aimst to do so in a way which enables the players to continue playing in their clubs on a long-term basis and become involved generally with their clubs.

Reported benefits from pilot schemes:

  • Promoting health and fitness which decreases the risk of obesity.

  • Improvements in co-ordination.

  • Promoting positive mental health by reducing levels of anxiety among participants.

  • Promoting healthy self- image through confidence building and positive interactions with others.

Currently we have 8 tennis players participating. They have made excellent progress in the first few weeks.  We have a one hour training session every Friday morning.

The ‘Swords Tennis Club’ have just had their courts resurfaced and we were the first group out to play on them!
